Underwater Test Sets a New Bar for the Commercial Vehicle E-Axle

Oct 12,2026

ZHUCHENG, China, October 12, 2026 — The commercial vehicle e-axle race has moved from the data sheet to the test tank: reported on October 10, 2026, XCMG Automobile ran its new e-axle submerged and energized at 800 V, braking and reversing underwater, past the IPX7 rule the industry has used for years.

Water, mud and salt are now design inputs. Fleets in ports, mines and construction sites lose more uptime to water ingress and corrosion than to a lack of peak power. Monsoon floods, mine wash-downs and salt spray attack the same parts: front axle wheel ends, drive axle housings and e-axle high-voltage connectors.

Why IPX7 no longer settles the argument. The common commercial vehicle benchmark tests a component unpowered, one metre deep, for 30 minutes. XCMG kept 800 V flowing while the motor worked, checking insulation and sealing under load. XCMG says its team wrote the e-axle TCU control logic in-house and holds dozens of patents on the unit.

Efficiency now comes from the system. Industry drive-system efficiency sits near 91%. XCMG attacks it with an 800 V platform, a hairpin oil-cooled motor, two-stage reduction and low-friction bearings. Its HanJing range, launched September 2026, pairs a 612 kWh 6x4 rated over 500 km loaded with a 577 kWh 4x2 above 600 km, and an integrated e-axle cutting energy use about 15% below the industry average.

Exports turn validation into a sales argument. Zhejiang Securities' October 9, 2026 review put September heavy truck exports near 40,000 units, up about 21%, and sees about 450,000 this year against 364,000 in 2025 customs data, led by Africa, Latin America and Central Asia. Heat, dust, unpaved roads and thin service networks make a sealed e-axle, a serviceable wheel end and a long oil-change drive axle worth more than another 20 kW.

What axle makers must prove next. Buyers will want energized immersion results, salt-spray and dust hours, thermal mapping at full load and wheel-end intervals across e-axle and conventional drive axle lines. Zhucheng Yihe Axle Co., Ltd. builds front axle, drive axle and e-axle programmes for those duty cycles, not one headline figure.

The takeaway: in 2026 a commercial vehicle axle is judged by what its maker can prove — water depth, dust hours and heat soak — not by the peak power on the e-axle data sheet.
