Software Now Decides the Winner in the Commercial Vehicle Axle

Sep 29,2026

ZHUCHENG, China, September 29, 2026 — The contest in the commercial vehicle axle has moved inside the housing. On September 24, Dongfeng Dana Axle Co., Ltd. (DDAC) completed the A-sample of its first self-developed MTCU integrated axle assembly, clearing all 36 function and performance tests seven months after approval in February 2026.

What MTCU actually is. MTCU — the integrated power drive and shift control unit — is the core control module of an electric drive axle. DDAC called the A-sample its own base for e-axle system integration and a step from axle maker toward electric powertrain supplier. Reliability validation and customer introduction follow.

Torque is being managed per wheel. At IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover (September 14–20), Hangzhou CDTL showed the EA5000NP distributed e-axle: two oil-cooled motors, a two-speed transmission and independent left- and right-wheel drive with no mechanical differential. Its 800 V version is rated 660 kW and peaks at 900 kW, and the platform runs in more than 3,000 vehicles.

Hardware still has to travel. Reporting published September 28 on the Chinese trucks shown in Hannover for Europe found one shared name on the wheel ends of models from FAW Jiefang, Dongfeng, Foton and Deepway: ConMet. Chinese OEMs carried a familiar wheel-end partner into a new market.

Configurations keep multiplying. DAF Trucks added new axle configurations for its diesel and electric commercial vehicle platforms in September 2026. Trackers put the truck axle market at US$23.43 billion in 2026, rising to US$36.35 billion by 2035, a 5.0% compound annual rate.

Where Yihe Axle stands. Zhucheng Yihe Axle Co., Ltd. builds front axles and drive axles for commercial vehicles and supplies new-energy axle assemblies. Software only multiplies the value of a well-made axle; beam stiffness, housing integrity and wheel-end life still decide whether a truck stays on the road.

The takeaway: in 2026 a commercial vehicle axle is specified as a controlled system — software decides how torque is shared between wheels, and front axle, drive axle and e-axle alike are only as good as the control logic and wheel end behind them.
