Hydrogen Trucks Arrive: The New Test for the Commercial Vehicle Axle
Pageviews:-

Hydrogen reached commercial volume in China's heavy truck fleet in October 2026 and resets what a commercial vehicle axle must prove. A fuel-cell tractor still puts torque down through a motor and an e-axle, so the argument moves off peak torque and onto uptime across a five-year, 120,000 km-a-year duty cycle.

55 fuel-cell tractors start work in Chengdu

Shudaoy Toyota Hydrogen Energy delivered 55 fuel-cell commercial vehicles rated at 49 tonnes in Qingbaijiang, Chengdu, reported 15 October. The STL150 system is rated 150 kW, up to 64% efficient, with a 30,000-hour life and cold start at -30 C. Sinotruk Wangpai builds the truck and Qingbaijiang state investment runs it; hydrogen use is about 7.5 kg per 100 km.

A four-year policy window

MIIT, the Ministry of Finance and the NDRC approved five city clusters, including the Xinjiang-Chengdu-Chongqing circle, for a four-year hydrogen pilot. Chengdu has close to 1,500 fuel-cell commercial vehicles with over 5.5 million km logged and eight stations above 500 kg a day; the Chengdu-Chongqing corridor has 41 stations and more than 2,000 fuel-cell vehicles on over 220 million tonnes of freight a year.

Uptime replaces torque as the drive axle metric

Operators put a fuel-cell tractor 10-20% below other new-energy trucks on five-year cost at 120,000 km a year and 80% highway running, helped by free Sichuan highway tolls. One unplanned drive axle stop can erase a year of that margin, so maintenance-free wheel ends, long oil-drain intervals and low-friction bearings outrank headline torque - and the front axle must carry its share without adding a service event.

Battery-electric got there first

Battery-electric heavy trucks are already past halfway: First Commercial Vehicle Network data cited by Sinotruk on 15 October puts September new-energy heavy truck sales at 33,100 units, up 37% year on year, with penetration at a record 50.28% against 28.93% a year earlier. Hydrogen is a second zero-emission route, not a way around the e-axle.

The Yihe Axle view

Tanks, a buffer battery and an e-axle redistribute mass along the frame, so front axle rating, housing stiffness and wheel-end sealing on a 49-tonne tractor must be re-derived for the duty cycle, not carried over from a diesel 6x4. Zhucheng Yihe Axle Co., Ltd. engineers front axles, drive axles and e-axle assemblies around uptime and service interval.

Bottom line

In China's heavy truck market, hydrogen moved the commercial vehicle axle benchmark in October 2026 from peak torque to lifetime uptime: a 49-tonne fuel-cell tractor keeps its 10-20% cost edge only if its drive axle and front axle stay out of the workshop.
