The trailer axle stopped being passive on October 28, 2026: CIMC Vehicles (SZSE 301039) said its EV-RT programme had put a trailer e-axle and split battery pack into test validation, with the trailer already braking and recovering energy in the tractor-trailer loop.
CIMC Puts an E-Axle on the Trailer
EV-RT lets the trailer brake, recover energy and add auxiliary drive in set duty cycles. CIMC says coordinated tractor-trailer control has measurably shortened braking distance. Two of six EV-RT steps are done: electric tractor with semi-trailer, and modular mobile charging.
The Tractor Side Deletes the Driveshaft
With Chinese OEMs, CIMC is restructuring chassis and cutting weight, and fits an integrated e-axle-and-tank-top layout on its Spark electric mixer. Deleting the driveshaft frees frame length for batteries. CIMC sold 38,800 units in Q3, up 6.2 percent, and 116,000 in nine months, up 14.6 percent.
Policy Fixes the Route, the Route Fixes the Axle
On October 28, People's Daily reported four ministries issuing the Green Transport 15th Five-Year Plan: new-energy heavy trucks pushed from shuttles to trunk lines, and about 30,000 km of zero-carbon road corridors by 2030. Beijing launched a Three Corridors pilot that day on the Beijing-Tianjin, Beijing-Shanghai and Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau expressways, with a 30 percent new-energy freight target for 2030. A fixed corridor makes gradient, distance and payload predictable - the inputs that set front axle load and drive axle ratio, and let a trailer e-axle size motor and regenerative torque.
Global Volume Still Sets the Pace
Global South volume hit 8,000 units in Q3, up 14.6 percent, and 25,500 in nine months, up 44.4 percent; Europe rose 14.9 percent. In North America, where ACT Research puts dry-van and refrigerated trailer sales down 5.6 and 2.6 percent, CIMC grew 5.9 and 13.1 percent. GlobalTrailer ranked CIMC first for a 14th year, its lead widening to 74,000 units.
Conclusion: by late October 2026 the commercial vehicle axle has split in two - a tractor e-axle that deletes the driveshaft, and a trailer drive axle that brakes, recovers energy and can drive - so suppliers win on control integration and duty-cycle data, not load rating alone.
